Dr. Smith Signature Workshops

Invite Dr. Smith to engage your community in the work of interpretation, images, the bible, and Howard Thurman! She does both in-person and virtual workshop experiences.

She has worked with Chautauqua Institute, Calvin Institute, Wabash Center for Teaching, and various denominational, interfaith, and nonprofit organizations (methodist, baptist, episcopal, presbyterian, Jewish, non-religious, etc.).

  • For diverse ecumenical and interfaith settings. This workshop is a guided journey through Thurman readings, images, and discussions. It invites participants to reflect, engage, and create models for meaning-making practices that are aware of “others” as well as the self. See Dr. Smith’s essay, “Thurman-eutics: Howard Thurman’s ‘Clothesline’ for the Interpretation of the Life of the Mind and Journey of the Spirit,” in the edited volume called, Anchored in the Current: Discovering Howard Thurman as Educator, Activist, Guide, and Prophet.

  • For diverse ecumenical and interfaith settings. This workshop explores the meanings of the Gospels’ death and/or resurrection accounts through the visual and literary works of African American artists and writers. It re-introduces participants to themes of judicial interrogation, crucifixion, community witness, and resurrection from the perspective of the African American experience and story. See Dr. Smith’s essay, “Witnessing Jesus Hang: Reading Mary Magdalene’s View of Crucifixion through Ida B. Wells’s Chronicles of Lynching” in the thirtieth-anniversary edition of the iconic volume, Stony the Road We Trod: African American Biblical Interpretation.

  • For Christian groups, particularly affinity groups and retreat experiences. A guided journey through parable interpretation using the bible and textiles.

  • For Christian settings interested in interpretations of familiar New Testament texts, particularly the Gospels, from the works of 19th century African American women.

  • For Christian study and learning communities. Introduces those books of the New Testament often neglected in the study of the bible. It is a journey of discovery focusing on the language, imagery, and themes of these books of the bible.
