High Adventure

Thurman Quote: “Always we are visited. Sometimes it is by an idea for which we do not seem to have had any previous preparation; sometimes by the penetration of an inspiration that shoots us out of the common path onto a road of high adventure; sometimes by the cumulative energy of a precious memory shedding a quiet haze over the entire landscape along which we walk. …”

Citation:  “Always We Are Visited,” in The Inward Journey, 50.

Description: Thurman here is inviting the reader to consider the role of memory and beyond. This quote is situated in a longer excerpt where he is engaging the idea of us, as people, being visited. And you might be asking, “by who?” Or “by what?” This question is an appropriate response and is a part of the complexities of this work. Thurman is trying to challenge us to sit in exactly that, considering the who that have come before us and the dreams that wander beyond us.
